At a few steps away from the Bed Breakfast in Rome Best Vatican you definitely have to visit the Colosseum, not far, and easily reachable by few buses stop, or by a long walk.
The Colosseum, originally known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, or simply Amphitheatre, is the most famous Roman Amphitheatre, situated in the centre of the city of Rome. Capable of seating 50.000 spectators is the biggest and most important Roman Amphitheatre and the largest monument of ancient Rome. The Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles (animal hunt, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on classical mythology). It clearly explains the architectural and building roman concepts of the early Imperial Era, based on the curved and enveloping line given by the elliptic plan and on the complexity of the buildings systems. Arch and domes are linked together in a strong structural connection.
The building is a 527 meters ellipse circumference, with 187.5 meters axis per 156.5 meters. Inside, the arena’s measure are 86 meters per 54 meters, with a surface of 3.357 m square. The modern high is 48,5 meters, but originally was 52 meters.
The Colosseum, as well as the whole centre of Rome, has been included in the list of Humanity Property by UNESCO in 1980. In the 2007 it has even been included between the Seven World modern Wonders after a disputed competition.
